What is a notary?
A notary, or notary public, is a person who is officially allowed to verify important documents and signatures. Their job is to make sure that the people signing a document are who they say they are and that they understand what they are signing.
Notaries act as neutral witnesses, meaning they do not take sides. They check identification, watch as people sign, and then use a special stamp or seal to show that everything was done correctly. This process helps prevent fraud and makes legal agreements more trustworthy.
What are some reasons I would need a notary?
You’ll need a notary for many different kinds of legal paperwork. Some examples include:
- Buying or selling a house
- Making a will or power of attorney
- Taking out a loan
- Some school or travel forms
- Affidavits
A notary will witness your signature and make sure that everything is filled out correctly.
Where can I find a notary?
Notaries can be found at many banks, UPS/FedEx locations, and public libraries.
